Oxygen and the SLP

Lori is a Speech Language Pathologist and Registered Respiratory Therapist with over 20 years in acute care settings, as well as a Marine Corps veteran, wife, and mother. Early in her career she worked on patient centered care protocols with an award winning team at University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center that were accepted by the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) before completing her Masters in Communication Sciences and Disorders at University of Central Florida. Through her work in acute and post-acute care settings throughout Florida and Arizona, Lori has focused her career on patient and professional education, emphasizing current evidence and seeking out evidence base for emerging and current interventions that intersect her skill sets. She is currently a member of the Arizona Speech-Language-Hearing Association Medical Committee.

Abstract: 
This is an introductory to intermediate course in the noninvasive equipment and theory behind oxygen therapy with emphasis on the anatomical and physiological impact these modes have for patients in need of speech language pathology services. It will discuss common practices, interprofessional communication, and emerging technologies with review of salient evidence and recommendations from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Learner Outcomes:
After completing this course, participants will:

  1. Identify noninvasive oxygen therapy equipment, their delivery method, and deliverednFIO2 or LPM
  2. Describe the impact varying modes of noninvasive oxygen therapy may have on patient anatomy and physiology
  3. Discuss which modes of noninvasive oxygen therapy may impact speech or swallowing to better inform clinical decision making.
